BLOOMING BUMBLE BEES

SCROLL DOWN

BLOOMING BUMBLE BEES

PolleNation is our research project, looking at integrating pollinator pasture back into the metro Vancouver's urban CENTERS. along with some brilliant partners, this research is now moving forward and integrating with numerous cities in the region. the hard work paid off!

OUR AIMS

So what are we planning to do? We are going to make this city a hive for beneficial species. By testing four methods of management in 20+ sites across the city of Vancouver, we are going to see what simple changes we can introduce to maintenance practices to boost its ecological value. Whether it is inter-seeding our lawns with clover, completely leaving our lawns to grow into meadows, or seeding west coast wildflowers, the aim is to keep it cheap and functional.

We do appreciate that urban green space is cherished, so what is the balance between ecological health and the functionality of a park? Our work will take into account everything from public interaction, insect visitation to bloom counts, making sure that every aspect is covered and collated.

OUR MAINTENANCE REGIMES

LAWN

What are the ecological benefits of existing methods? How will it compare to alternative methods we are proposing?

CLOVER

Nitrogen fixing, pollinator loving, low growing, could the clover be the perfect partner for our conventional lawns?

NO MOW

What wildflowers will grow if we completely stop mowing?

WILDFLOWER

Using seed from West Coast America, how will a completely designed environment benefit our ecology?

Locations

Over 2015, we installed many research sites that were distributed across Vancouver's urban realm. Each site was upon public land and perfect for a sunny afternoon stroll. Due to the new managements being such a success, a number of them are expanding even further in 2016, so have a look at the maps below and come visit our work. We might even be there to have a chat.
